- The 8 Domains form 4 dimensional axes, with each axis corresponding to some non-spatial dimension. These axes are formed by the pairs Fire/Water, Air/Earth, Life/Death and Order/Chaos. - The Elements make two physical dimensions, while the other four domains make two spiritual dimensions. - It is possible – though not easy – for creatures to move along these axes. Doing so would let them see a slightly different “version” of the universe as they move. - Certain “versions” of the universe located at a specific set of coordinates along those axes are known as the planes of existence. - The Prime Material Plane is located at the center of all these axes. - Most planes have been determined and named due to historical significance. A few planes exist only theoretically: The “versions” of the universe that exist at the extreme of each axis is known as an Absolute Plane. It is theorized that none of these can sustain any form of life, and nobody has ever attempted to travel there. - This theory is correct. The planes at the extremes of the axes contain nothing but the essence or divine concept they represent, and any other essences or concepts simply cannot exist there. - Given this, any plane can be located by its "domain coordinates", with the Material Plane at the origin. - Moving along the Life/Death axis from the Material Plane would result in arriving into the Feywild or the Shadowfell, respectively. - Moving along the Order/Chaos axis from the Material Plane would result in arriving into Teleiotes or Limbo, respectively. These are Absolute Planes, and no other named planes exist in this axis. - The Teleiotes is the plane of order, but does not replace the Mechanus of other cosmologies: Mechanus is now aligned to the Life-Order domains. There are no life forms native to Teleiotes, just like there are no life forms native to Limbo. In contrast to the ever-changing nature of Limbo, Teleiotes changes very little and strongly resists outside forces that attempt to cause changes. It looks like the inside of a kaleidoscope, where any little change is replicated throughout the entire plane, and moving into it would look as if the mirrors got smaller and closer together, to finally collapse into one single homogeneous space. - The Elemental Planes lie directly on the Elemental axes, where the Fire and Water planes are directly opposed to each other, and the same occurs with the Air and Earth Planes. - Given this, there are 4 Planes that lie somewhere between two non-opposing Elements: these are the Plane of Grass (Water and Earth), the Plane of Metal (Fire and Earth), the Plane of Lightning (Fire and Air) and the Plane of Ice (Water and Air). Note that these planes lie at the center of the Life/Death and Order/Chaos axes. - There also exists an axis that corresponds to mind. This axis is more esoteric, and moving along it is considerably more difficult than along the others. It is usually not considered in this cosmology, as all the presented planes lie in the same location along this axis. - Strictly speaking, the two extremes of the mind axis correspond to Imagination and Reality. As the universe exists only in the mind of the God, all of the planes lie on the same place along the axis. - The Ethereal Plane, the Astral Sea, and the Far Realm are not, in fact, planes, but areas farther along the Imagination axis. - Certain elements of the universe can be represented in the real universe, and this makes these elements grow closer to Reality. This occurs, for example, when a creature is represented with a figurine on a battlemap, or when a Fateweaver’s characteristics are written down on a character sheet. ## Categorization of Planes of Existence - At the center of the universe lies the Prime Material Plane. - There exist 8 pure Planes of Existence, each corresponding to some Domain. As such, they lie directly on the axes. - These are the four Elemental Planes, Limbo (Chaos), Teleiotes (Order), Feywild (Life), and Shadowfell (Death). - No other planes lie directly on the axes, and are instead aligned with two or more domains. - Mechanus: Life + Order - Nine Hells : Death + Fire + Order - Abyss: Death + Fire + Chaos - Mount Celestia: Death + Air + Order - While not strictly planes, the Ethereal Plane, the Astral Sea, and the Far Realm correspond to certain ranges of distance from the origin along the mind axis.
